Tortoise God Kunkaliim is considered the master, lord of the islands and sea, and the wise overseer of those who have passed on at sea. Although he is not god of the sea itself Kunkaliim is revered by all sailors of the southern seas as a force to be dealt with when the seas are in danger or when he is not prayed to after sailors are dead. This is how some believers explain earthquakes, and hurricanes that are also said to be caused by other gods of the sea. Being a Tortoise Kunkaliim is god of the creatures with shells and it is considered an insult when one does not pay homage to him when one such creature is killed or hunted.
It is said Kunkaliim originated from a large island that had a mountain on it. When another deity breathed life into the large island Kunkaliim was born. All the islands in the southern seas were made by him, whether they are offspring, droppings, or drops of the sea that fell from him as he emerged to surface from time to time. He knows all the creatures of the seas, and watches over the fleets and all craft that sail on the sea. Because he has watched all the vessels explore the ocean Kunkaliim is well educated in every aspect of the ships. His shell has a city on top of it for all the dead to live in while he traverses the seas.
