First Patrol

Elydark sat on the stone railing next to the steps. His First Mate wore his usual attire of a laced shirt under a hardened leather cuirass, dark colored cotton pants made for sea faring, and rubbery sea boots. At his sides dangled a Drow style scimitar that appeared more like a straight sword with a clip point, and a set of three pistols. Second Mate Caric Morlen leaned against the rail wearing a white shirt with rolled up sleeves, blackened gray striped pants, a red vest under a weapons harness and a belt. It appeared unnecessary but it proved useful in combat. Caric was half elf with a human face, elf ears, thick, long blond hair. He liked to fight using a cutlass and a gauntlet buckler used to block and punch.

This Second Mate and Officer would often use a double barrel shotgun, and a modernized blunderbuss. At the bottom of the steps were Inaleth his helmsman number one and Sophine his officer, swordsman, and lover. Inaleth was a female Drow who wore her hair in a long single braid. This Dark Elf drove the ship who wore a red tank top, red pants under a duster that appeared water proof. Even though she steered the ship in the bridge she still wore something water proof. There was Sophine in a jumpsuit that used to belong to a Gantronese Officer. She modified the officer's jumpsuit uniform to her own liking. It resembled her own attitude and character. As usual she was armed with her rapier.

“Afternoon Captain what are our orders?” First Mate Elydark asked Jenere with his arms folded. The rest of the officers stood up with their focus entirely on their Captain.

“They want us to patrol these waters, get rid of the invaders of the island and sink any enemy ships.” Jenere answered his First Mate. He descended the steps passing a few of his officers. As the Captain went down the steps Elydark and Caric followed him down. Inaleth and Sophine waited for him to pass by before following him.

With four officers following at his heels Captain now privateer, Jenere Omavern made his way to the docks on the harbor. Gahn Diveros did not have a large population compared to some cities. However this one settlement consisted a harbor for the locals and pirates next to a port for trade.

The five new privateers walked through a lively town of inhabitants, travelers from Meze, sailors, a few carts along the streets, merchants selling their products and wares, workers carrying loads of products, crowds gathered at some places, and town militias on patrol guarding and keeping watch over the place. Jenere led the group of pirates towards the tavern-inn where they found some of the crew. Not saying a single word Jenere gestured for Elydark to round up these crew members. The dark elf approached these crew members urging them to get up and head straight for the ship. Seven crew members left the tavern for the ship with a little pain from Elydark.

“Caric go see them have prepared the ship for today's patrol.” Jenere ordered the Second Mate who left his side to join the crew members. His gaze went straight to Elydark who finished a bottle of the local rum-tea drinks one of the crew left behind. The Captain watched his First Mate for a few seconds before he went over to him. His two female officers and crew member followed him as they came to Elydark's side.

“Rally the rest out of their hiding places. Send them straight to the ship.” Jenere commanded his officers. All three of them sprang into action and began the search for the remaining crew members who decided to lay about in certain places. He had let the whole crew disperse during that meeting, but now it was time for their new jobs to begin.

Instead of partaking in this hunt Jenere decided to go back to his alone. Going alone never bothered him it was only the female companionship he desired. He hardly had anything to fear going to back to harbor where his vessel the Abomination sat waiting for him. Just before he turned a corner a large group of figures appeared in his path. He did not get the numbers right but estimated over a hundred or more figures. Since they stood at the very end of the street it was hard to tell their true numbers. Among these figures he did count nine Lesdonians with their hats and beards, ten Nevoran appearing figures with white hair, and the rest were a mixture of other races and nationalities. He thought he counted seventeen women dressed in modern-style mixed other styles. Most of these pirates or privateers wore jumpsuits taken from the corpses of Gantronese and dyed a specific color that was not a light color. Jenere was about to draw his weapon, but stayed his hand to study what weapons these privateers wielded. A female figure in a long black coat over a striped bodice-shirt with large belts around her waist, stepped out of the crowd. She approached him before he could tell what she was armed with. This female held out a hand signaling her men to stand down.

“Are you Captain Jenere Omavern?” she asked him.

“Yes, yes I am Captain Omavern of the Abomination.” He answered the female. He was about to ask for her name, but she already replied back.

“My name is Captain Zana Cadiir of the Ego of Queens. Both our crews and ships will be patrolling these waters. It is not a glorious start as a Privateer for the Vestrisians, but we must start somewhere or do our duty.” The female introduced herself to the Privateer Captain. She looked at him with some hint of interest.

“Tell me Captain Omavern how long have you been sailing as a pirate?” Zana asked the elf Captain.

“For about eighty years.” Jenere replied rather curious as to how long she had been sailing the seas herself. He wanted to know how young she was or at least her age. Those sorts of questions he kept to himself. “What about you Captain Caniir?”

“For over one hundred years I have sailed the seas of Calorn. As a Forsythan I am to turn more than a century and a half older than an old perverted fart who pretends to be some hermit with a big stiff eel.” Caniir proclaimed to the elf Captain.

Jenere was taken back, but laughed a little. He could tell she was a Forsythan until she had said so. It was because her entire body and neck were covered. Most of this was had a blue, blood or beer colored birthmark in a variety of shapes, but mostly scars. Hers might have been on another part of the body like her shoulder, a limb or her back. For an ordinary human to be two hundred years old seemed impossible unless they had mixed blood. Jenere knew his kind often lived to be 650 or 1200 or more years old. Forsythans lived to be 300 to 500 years old and older if they were fortunate and healthy enough.

“Let's not allow age to be a factor nor our experience at piracy to get in each other's way our mission.” Jenere responded to Caniir.

“I would argue against that due to my status as Captain and my experience. Our employer wants us to start now.” Captain Caniir said turning around to face her crew. “Alright get to the ship pronto!”

His new acquaintance Captain Zana Caniir herded her own crew back to their ship. As they cleared the way Jenere made it through a growing gap. Not heeding or paying an attention to the area around him Jenere returned to the Abomination. His return was greeted with salutes and the various hellos including a hug from Sophine. He wrapped his arms around her squeezing her with all his love.

“Don't get mad there is a female captain named Zana Caniir who sails the Ego of Queens. She and her crew were also ordered to patrol these waters.” Jenere said hoping she would not get mad.

“Whatever.” She replied to him as if he was being a little over exasperate. Sophine released him and grabbed an arm as soon as he let go of her. His lover pulled him over to the ship as the crew boarded the vessel and prepared to set sail.

Every crew member performed the assigned task they had for preparing the ship. Mooring lines were gathered up and stored away, the anchors hauled up, turrets were uncovered and prepped for possible combat, storage was locked up, crew members rushed to their stations. Nimikos climbed up to his own station in the crow's nest, engines were cranked on, and like it was a masted ship the crew raised yard arms with the use of a crank system. Sails were dropped as the crew switched on giant fans to get the ship going while the generators and engines came on. It made a strange sight to behold in a progressing era. A modernized looking vessel with engines, motors still using sails.

Jenere entered the bridge command center where they had the radar, and a few accommodations below it. The radar antenna was kept where it was and the control tower for the bridge was set on top of the bridge itself. Sophine escorted him to the bridge where his helmsmen, officers, and higher ranking crew were. Inaleth was at the helm beginning to steer the ship towards the open sea. With the wheel's handles in his own grip Jenere would sail the Abomination out of a harbor or port with skill. Inside this bridge those scientists modified the equipment, consoles, radars, engine control and monitor, a chart table, and navigational console they had to learn how to use. Each of these stations were manned by the scientists and the more intelligent crew members. His officers, and two Mates stood at attention against the wall, and other parts of the bridge.

“Captain I see another ship it looks to be a frigate flying privateer colors under the Vestrisian flag!” He heard Nimikos' voice through a radio speaker. Jenere motioned for the radio phone to be handed to him. A crew member picked it up and gave it to Jenere while Inaleth was still at the wheel.

“Nimikos, this is the Captain, over. That Frigate is the Ego of Queens. She is Captained by Zana Caniir who is also on the same mission as us.” Jenere said to the crew man on the crow's nest before saying over second time.

“Alright Captain should we do the same, fly the privateer flag?” Nimikos asked his Captain over the the radio.

“No our colors should do fine until another nation attacks.” Jenere replied to Nimikos' question.

“Aye, aye Captain it looks like we'll be running into some cloudy weather with some chance of rain.” Nimikos said over the radio.

Nimikos must of hung up the radio since he heard nothing. Jenere put the phone back in the slot next to one that was hanging. The Captain maneuvered his way to the steering wheel. Inaleth stepped away from the wheel allowing Jenere to control the steering. He felt the engines rumble the vessel as it sped up to catch up with the Ego of Queens. Both ships sped on the ocean almost parallel with each other at a distance. For hours the two vessels continued their patrol around the designated area of patrol. There was not much to see except for other vessels, a few islands including the one they needed to investigate if need be, several Vestrisian vessels and those of other nations heading in different directions and some marine life.

The rain obscured some of their vision but they were still able to tell what objects were what. As the rain increased to down pour lights were switched on so they could see better. He was surprised to see no lightning or any hint of unusual sea storms. The sea waves rose up and down, smashed against each other and the waters moved slightly more than the calmness it showed. Up ahead he spotted a fleet of vessels heading towards the island they needed to investigate. Jenere turned his head in search of an officer and found his First Mate Elydark and Sophine within his gaze.

“Elydark go down and see that everything is secured, Sophine rally up a boarding party or two. Radio for the Boatswain, and Gunner to come up here.” Jenere ordered the officers and crew. The First Mate, and Swordsman officer left the bridge. Crew member Ersig picked up the phone piece placing it against mouth and ears.

“Boatswain Morgoe you are needed at the bridge, Boatswain Morgoe the Captain requests your presence Gunner Master Abrath you are also needed on the bridge, Captain's Orders.” Ersig said over the loudspeaker across the ship. Within minutes Boatswain Morgoe, Gunner n Master Abrath entered the bridge. Morgoe stood above average height with a robust appearance from hard labor aboard ships. He wore nothing, but a vest, endurable trousers for the sea, and wore no shoes. Abrath stood next to Morgoe about half a foot shorter than he was. The ship's head Gunner was female with a hint of mixed blood. Her own body showed she was a strong woman who had labored hard and gained strength from it. As the Gunner she ensured all the heavy guns, AA guns, machine guns, and cannons worked.

“Morgoe, how are the wounded doing with the Doctors and Scientists we hire last month?” Jenere asked the first series of questions.

“Sleeping as though they had worked hard.” Morgoe answered his Captain.

“How many new recruits do we have? Are the boats ready?” Jenere asked the Boatswain who seemed a little more focused on the rain.

“We have seven new recruits Captain. Those boats are still secured due to the current weather, Captain sir.” Boatswain Morgoe replied in near protest about the boats going out.

“Then get them ready and have those recruits scrub down the lowest decks of the ship.” Jenere ordered the Boatswain. Abrath was next who straightened herself at attention. Boatswain Morgoe saluted his Captain and rushed out of the bridge.

“Gunner Abrath how are the ship's weapons?” He asked her as if to catch her off guard.

“The ship's weapons, and guns cap'n, are uncovered and idle.” Abrath replied in a Cydnam accent.

“Good have them ready for battle there could be a small fleet of enemy vessels over there.” Jenere said dismissing the Gunner who exited the bridge they way she entered. Jenere looked over to see the Ego of Queens rotating her turrets. He counted just three turrets rotating to face the fleet of ships. He vessel opened fire on the ships drawing attention away from the island.

Zana appeared to have five opponents that were shaped like upside down triangle prisms with the ship's bridge and multiple turrets. Each of these ships had the standard set up for ships of steel, but more abstract shaped structures on the top. Zana's vessel unleashed a small barrage of fire into her first target. She was far more accurate than a galleon with fifty guns on a single deck. The first barrage was hit in the bow and the leading turret. Both hits tore the bow apart and rendered the turret useless. Her second barrage only hit the center of the ship's side missing the rest of it. Zana's ship turned a little to allow the other turrets in the back a clear line of fire. All five ships returned fire hitting most of the area around her ship.

“Target the ship closest to her.” Jenere ordered before taking the wheel. He began steering his way towards the engagement. Ersig communicated through the radio passing out the orders to the gun crews. Alarms went off as the ship's crew prepared for battle. The Abomination's turrets came to life as the barrels rose up. He turned the vessel so his turrets could fire on the same side. Zana's ship fired a few more rounds hitting her target while suffering a few hits. Her target's bridge exploded forcing the ship to sail blind.

“Fire a volley when ready!” Jenere ordered with a loud voice. He watched the enemy ships as his command was echoed through the radio. All Jenere could do know was just watch as his turrets rotated to face their own target. The Ego of Queens fired all turrets into the hull of her target destroying the center of the ship. Flame erupted along with smoke after the blasts and explosions. In moments the entire Gantronese vessel began to sink. Zana's ship began targeting the next one as Jenere's ship opened fire on his intended target. Ten of the shots fired made impact wrecking the Gantronese vessel. The vessel was peppered with holes like holed cheese. He maneuvered the Abomination to the right keeping a good speed to avoid getting hit. His maneuvering forged a semi circle pattern in the ocean as he kept the ships in his gun's line of fire. He then maneuvered at a left ward angle so the ship would not turn all the way to the right. Zana apparently found her ship caught between two of the Gantronese ships. It appeared her vessel would easily be destroyed but her ship had stronger layers than her ship led to believe. Her turrets fired on both enemies while her crews opened with smaller heavier guns and missile launchers. Jenere's own vessel finished off the other ship and moved towards the other ships that tried to trap Zana.

“Fire on the ship flanking her starboard side!” Jenere commanded. His words were repeated by Ersig into the mouth piece of the radio. As he ordered the crew of the Abomination fired the turrets at the ship on Zana's starboard side. Because of the speed the Gantronese were going they passed Zana's Ego of Queens. The one trying to block her path attempted to stop but was forced to move out of the way. Although the Ego of Queens had three enemy ships surrounding her she still managed to fight back. The one on her starboard side sustained heavy damage from her guns as well as Jenere's own turrets. Jenere had the turrets target the one Zana was engaging as the last one began to flee. It appeared this one was trying to escape. Nearly forming a crescent shape Jenere noticed the ship on Zana's starboard slowly came to a halt in the waters. Her latest target lost all of its guns and began smoking profusely. Fires and smoke rose up slowly on the two enemy vessels that flanked the Ego of Queens. Such amount of damage appeared like a city on fire while Zana's own vessel showed signs of damage on her own hull. Once the firing ceased and the atmosphere calmed down Jenere steered the Abomination closer to the flightless ships.

The Brotherhood's Council Chapter

It was a long and boring journey to the ring shaped island of Crukogh Ait. At least it felt like a long journey to Senestra who felt cooped up in her private cabin. She was aboard a large traveling barge meant for voyage’s up and down the coasts of New Angoth and Veek islands. She had to wait for two days aboard the barge.
Senestra had Vaynis as a traveling companion who seemed to know more about this region and the Triangle Brotherhood. It appeared to be more familiar with the Cren Order than she realized. One the day she landed on Curkogh Ait Senestra was greeted by a mage who acted as a Donor associate named Cadigossi. Vaynis escorted her to the inn they were staying at. This Cadigossi had a tall slender figure about him with a Veek and Crowsian appearances.
The inn they stayed at was called the Crowning Mermaid. Here Senestra met another Donor named Andolos of Lothi. Both Donars took Senestra and Vaynis to room in the inn that appeared to be unattached from the building complex. Senestra had been given two of the Angoths who attacked Triaunes as protection and man servants. Vaynis managed to recruit a large black furred Vah Shir as a body guard. She sat in the room with Vaynis, their guards and the two Donars.
“We are two of twenty one Donars who act as associates and messengers to the council of the Triangle Brotherhood. I Donar Andolos shall take over from Donar Cadigossi whose job is to greet those who wish to speak with the Council. He also organizes meetings between Donars or other higher officials and those come to see them. Donar Cadigossi often sees other guests and arranges their rooms for them.” The Donar Andolos explained to them. He looked at the two women as though he had just forgotten their names.
“Please excuse me but who are you two again, your names have escaped me?” Andolos asked them. Senestra was first to say her name and occupation/profession.
“I am Medryn Senestra an emissary from Etras seeking help. My people and others of Auxmire are under the threat of invasion by the Cren Order. I have traveled here by sea aboard a vessel named the Lessiiv captained by Olverd from Ontasi. I believe he was from there.” Senestra answered Andolos while unsure if Olverd was from Ontasi or Isseult. Andolos nodded then turned to Vaynis and smiled the same as he did for Senestra.
“The name is Vaynis Cleverwaters, I am a Sea witch and lesser deity of these seas. My charge as Sea witch is to advise the Triangle Brotherhood’s Council, but I got side tracked by other things dealing with the Makool.” Vaynis said to the two Donars who were stumped to hear this.
“Aren’t you the Salt witch of these islands?” Cadigossi asked with wide eyes and shock on his face.
“Yes the reasons why I am called that is because I watch over the islands of the Angoths and those-“ she was cut off by another figure who burst into the room. The fool had startled Senestra and actually caused the guards to draw their weapons. This man ignored the weapons and looked at Donar Cadigossi.
“Excuse me Donar Cadigossi, but the Makool diplomats are here.” The foolish figure said.
“So I am needed you go and inform the other Porters that I will be there. Also ensure our guests from Lontai and the Veek Senators are cared for in the other inns.” Cadigossi said as he stood up to leave them. The Donar walked out of the room trailing after the Porter.
“Our apologies Vaynis please continue.” Donar Andolos offered to the witch-deity. He poured some wine into three goblets.
“”Thank you Donar, I am a wandering type of sea witch who tends to spy on the Makool Domains and the Goblin Raiders across the sea. For years I have blended in with specific groups of Makool and encouraged them to fight each other.” Vaynis said trying to make her own story brief. She picked up one of the goblets and handed it to her Vah Shir bodyguard who dipped his tongue in it. He gave it back to her showing it wasn’t poisoned.
“Just taking precautions, enough about me let us hear about this Triangle Brotherhood. Tell Medryn Senestra what she needs to know.” Vaynis urged Andolos. “And do tell us about yourself she added taking a sip of wine. Andolos looked flattered by Vaynis’ encouragement to tell them his story.
“I am a warlord who rose up to become Jarl. After becoming a Jarl and doing by duties for the Triangle Brotherhood, I was given the Donar position.” Andolos explained to the two women. He turned to Senestra as though he was admiring her beauty.
“The Council will not meet you until they know of your arrival and one of the Angoth Mages are present. I do speak of Levanna, and another Mage known as Bavothad from the Hilt. He has a higher rank than Levanna despite her status as High Mage of the Angoths.” Andolos said making Senestra shift a little in her seat.
“So we will have to stay here then and wait to hear from the Council?” she asked disappointed in waiting for the chance of meeting with this Council. This is just great I hope they realize the urgency of Auxmire’s need for more allies. Gods know how much longer the Etrasians, Velts, Groviscians, and the Civids can last against Cren! She thought inside her own head. Senestra kept her thoughts to herself. Her thoughts then turned to the Crowsians of Auxmire and to the Crowsians here.

“What of the Crowsians here? There are Crowsian states in Auxmire, but how did they come in league with the Triangle Brotherhood?” Senestra asked Andolos who was broken away from the conversation about the high towers of Ilon.
“They are involved with the Traingle Brotherhood through another alliance known as the Eigos Treaty. It was signed forty years ago between several Crowsian States and the Triangle Bortherhood. Come let us show you around this island/” Andolos offered Senestra.
“A fine idea Andolos. Senestra and I could use some leisurely time on this island. It could force the Donars and Porters to catch up to us.” Vaynis said grabbing Senestra by the arm. The Witch-Deity pulled Senestra along to the entrance following Andolos. There sat a traveling coach waiting for them. All three of them got inside before it set off down the road. For three days Senestra and Vaynis toured part of the island of Curkogh Ait.
Both women enjoyed the scenery of the island and many of its structures. Senestra followed Vaynis around Curkogh Ait. Her own impression of the island was bedazzled, amazed and very awestruck by the craftsmanship. She had never seen such craftsmanship before outside the city ruins near her home city and her uncle’s palace. On a very cool yet sunny day they took a walk on the beach. It was on the beach where the other Donars caught up with the trio. Her escorts Andolos and Vaynis did most of the talking before proceeding to meet the council.
“Are we ready to meet the Council Medryn Senestra, Emissary of Auxmire?” Andolos asked her with polite sincerity in his voice.
“Yes just let me put on something more appropriate and fitting for the meeting.” She requested.
“Very well we will wait.” He replied to her. Senestra had to hurry up since this was an opportunity she was looking for. As she went through her chest she found a nice looking garment with blue and purple lines along the seems, sleeves, and an extravagant shawl to drape over the shoulder. When she was ready she came out with everything ready for the trip to the council. All day they sailed over to the island of the triangle Brotherhood.
By night fall they arrived at the island. In the dark of the night the Medryn Emissary and her companions were escorted to the Council’s main palace like Hall. Here Senestra slept for the rest of that night realizing she was about to meet future allies. She lipped on the garment she chose that represent the colors of Etras and the Groviscian States right as soon as she awoke. In her fine garment she dined with Vaynis, Alagost, and another Donar named Temuht. He was a former Abydossian slave who was rescued by Angoths on a raid and received his education from the Veeks/Crowsians.
“How long before we meet the Triangle Brotherhood Council? I apologize for sounding impatiently rude and childish.” Senestra insisted on knowing while apologizing for asking.
Vaynis patted her han ensuring her it was okay. Senestra felt a sense of paralysis consume he from the touch. This feeling comforted her along with shocking her like a bolt of lighting struck her. This old diety simply smiled at her as though she was a child of hers. The sudden vibes of pride in her brought memories back to Senestra. She recalled seeing her older cousins and siblings being chosen. Some were to be Crusaders, others were given the freedom of their own choice. Etras’ armies consisted of cavalry armed with a long spear or lance and a weapon of their choosing. Foot soldiers were equipped with a shield, scaled armor, helmet, spear, mace or sword. Her thoughts were disrupted by Levanna who tapped her shoulder thrice.
“The Council will see you now. Follow me Medryn Senestra.” The Mage told her. Senestra got up to join Levanna to meet the Council of the Triangle Brotherhood. Vaynis stayed at the table letting the Emissary to her business. Senestra followed Levanna into a hallway that led straight to the center of the Hall. Both women stopped at a large double door guarded by six guards. Two of the guards opened the doors to the Council Member and the Emissary.
Senestra walked into a large chamber in the shape of a sphere. Three levels of platforms rested on the middle part of the wall. Upon these raised platforms that stretched from the floor to the center of the wall were thrones. A total of eighteen chairs that appeared as thrones sat on the connecting platforms. Seated in each chair was a Wizard, Druid, Mage or a Sage. In the center of this room was a single solitary erected platform. She went over there to stand before this council. All eyes of these council members were focused on her including the familiar Levanna who had just seated herself.
A herald came out from underneath the lowest platform. He introduced her as the emissary diplomat from Etras. The wizards, were Lord Degore, Uxius, Azohr, Clixone, Octas, and Marlene a few were Angoths, one was a Veek, another Crowsian and the others Irkan Clansmen. He named the four Mages as Raziel, Abodar, Bovathad, and of course Levanna the High Mage. Half were Angoths, the other two were Crowsian-Veeks. A trio of Druids sat in wooden carved thrones. Their names were addressed as Glasan, Ezanis, and Shorral. Each one came from the Irkan Clans. Four Sages sat among the Council. They were known as Sanast, Eethos of Veece, Malark and Toranon of the Angoths.
“Greetings great Council Members I come from Auximire seeking aid and-“ she was cut off by Clixone who snapped at her.
“We know why you have come here!”the female wizard eyed her with angry, wrathful, eyes under shortened auburn hair. Clixone wore a fur lined cloak over a fine velvet dress and knee high coal colored boots.
A wizard stood up to calm and silence Clixone with a wave of his hand. It was Uxius who was very healthy looking man with white hair, beard and elderly face. “Excuse me Madam Clixone she lost her child and husband to Cren privateer ships. Please speak tell us your tale and why you came seeking us out.”
“I…uh…” she honestly could not get the words out. Senestra felt flabbergasted by the Wizard Uxius permitting and urging her to speak. For several moments she could not find the words to speak until she looked over at Levanna. The sister of the Angoth Champion nodded to her encouragingly.
“Council Members of the Triangle Brotherhood alliance I Medryn Senestra Emissary of Etras come seeking aid against the Cren Hordes. For decades the Hordes and raiding parties of the Cren Order have been ransacking and invading our lands. Other Kingdoms and Peoples have shared the same fate as Etras. Yet there are kingdoms and chiefdoms able to hold the worst of these hordes. Oross, the Velts, Groviscians and even the Civids have been able to quell Cren’s armies. Even with our combined strength today we could not fair well against Cren’s countless armies. Etras has vast fields to defend, but her own cavalry and armies cannot maintain these invasions nor be in two places at once.” She paused letting herself catch her breath before continuing. The young determined Emissary spoke on one breath before this moment. As she allowed the Council to take this in and contemplate the situation she thought of home. Even though Etras had a force of some forty six thousand mounted long spears, and lancers along with Groviscians Hoplites, Maiden Archers, Etrasian Infantry, and Isseult Warriors could not guard all borders at once.
“We will consider your offer Medryn Senestra. Give us a few days while we discuss this offered alliance and the current crisis. Thank you for your time miss, but do not think we will turn this down, have a good stay on the island.” Uxius told her with a wry smile.
“Are you sure there is nothing else to discuss?” Senestra blurted out not believing their meeting was this short.
“Unless you’d like to tell us whether you sought us out or sought help from the Crowsians! Then this meeting has been adjourned.” Clixone barked at her showing they had other matters to discuss.
“We were seeking aid from the Crowsians in Auxmire but they turned us away. The Crowsian states of Camiss, Estris, Doshanos, East Mewn, and the two Jewel Crowsian States refused to lend any help or aid.”
“Are there Makool around your oceans?” Bavothad asked her.
“Yes there are a number of large islands where the Makool Domains rule.”Senestra answered Bavothad. She then recalled abandoned lands between Etras and the Independent states. “There are these abandoned lands we could offer as tribute in return for your aid.” This caught the entire council’s attention. Each one looked at the young Emissary Medryn Senestra with bewildered excitement. None of the kingdoms or small states dared claim those lands, but these Angoths would be able. Before Senestra could get another word she appeared to have made a few powerful allies.

Commando Part 31

With nothing else standing in their way the Vestrisian commando led his companions through the village and switchbacks. Back at the outpost the and the small port they found the rest of their party waiting by the yacht. Nanim Desparden, Hilastes and Eyanosa with the other cat steeds were waiting for them along with the officer in charge. Maphai explained what happened back at the clearing to their companions and the officer. Once the officer granted them clearance Seven warriors returned to the yacht. All of their cat steeds were settled down before the whole group of twelve soldiers, mercenaries, and warriors gathered inside the dining area.

Maurice began their meeting with informing the rest about the location of other Vestrisians and of the goons they ran into. Maphai included the possibilities that Caligari had sent out goons and gunslingers after them. Ordoz reported there was a group of gunslingers aside from the other groups mentioned. Vylinses and Cagan reported mainly wildlife, travelers, local tribesmen, and Uxanes. Taregan reported his hunting ventures while they were gone. His hunting included a few deer, two boars, and three large fish that appeared delicious. The Prowler had to ward off the cats with the fresh game he caught this morning.

Brittany had nothing to report to the meeting. She decided it was best to stay in the room the whole time. This infuriated everyone who almost turned on her but refrained from beating her to a pulp. Maphai proposed the men punish the arrogant lazy Red Heart in an erotic way. Maurice was against this but was shot down. He was convinced by Brittany who accepted the punishment. After all the men had been traveling for months without much time to feed certain needs. Cagan, Ordoz, and the Vestrisians were left with Brittany in the showers. She stripped herself nude before the men. The lone Red Heart pleasured them one at a time before each one mounted and copulated with her for some time. Each one took turns until they were exhausted. Acting like nothing had happened all participants showered, redressed, ate evening meals and retired for the remainder of the day.

Brittany crawled back into bed with Maurice who wrapped an arm over her hoping she learned a lesson. In the morning Maurice woke up trying to forget what they did to Brittany. The two lovers got up for a morning meal with their companions. Not one of them said a word about the dirty activity. Right after morning meals twelve companions took positions aboard the yacht. Some went to their steeds, a few drove the vessel, others relaxed in their cabins, and the rest kept an eye out for trouble.

Within minutes of taking positions they embarked from the dock. Maurice watched their progress from the stern. Maphai's yacht was driven through the opening that was created in days. They came across the river Vylinsis mentioned. Maurice noticed the river was wide enough for a frigate to sail through it. It was flanked by the jungle forest with branches jutting over the river forming a tunnel of leaves and wood. Taking the river route flanked by jungle proved a dangerous feat. Maurice had a flashback of the early days of Vestrisian expeditions into the eastern Unknown Lands from Borvados. This jungle river appeared identical to the one he and his comrades went through in smaller craft before being ambushed by Gantronese, Savages, Winged creatures, various predatory beasts, and other nightmarish things he did not recall, but were also the undoing the Imperial Gantronese forces. When he snapped out of the flashback he looked from side to side seeing nothing but the trees. Despite the appearance he knew eyes were watching them. Years in those mountains and the expeditions taught him that instinct.

This way brought them to a river that snaked its way through the jungle. He kept an eye out for hostiles and their Vestrisian friends. Although he saw mostly jungle he also saw jungle animals such as snakes, large lizards, and deer here and there. There were plenty of logs, fallen trees, overhanging branches, a few species of creatures he never saw , and abandoned huts. This one creature caught his attention. It appeared large, fat, dark gray, with no ears, large heads, a trunk, and thick legs. Maurice glanced at a large herd of this large species drinking from the river.

As they passed this herd of creatures the river branched out a little like a tree branch. Creeks and other rivers branched off this river to other directions. For a few more miles they made their way through the river with the same type of foliage flanking the river banks. Coming around the corner their yacht came upon a small dock attached to a jungle hut that was expanded into a lodge. On the dock stood a group of figures waving at them. One of these figures waved a tattered Vestrisian flag. Maurice raced to the side of the yacht and waved back at the figures. As the yacht came closer he counted seven Vestrisians in different clothing mixed with their uniforms. He recognized the faces of Steele-Oakley, Overton, and Gilleth among four other Vestrisians he hardly recognized. The Yacht was slowed down to dock along the river. Maphai had the anchors dropped to keep the vessel from drifting down river. Maurice tossed a few lines at the Vestrisians who tied the lines to the dock.

After docking each companion aboard the yacht disembarked to greet the found Vestrisians. Steele-Oakley introduced them to the four other Vestrisians who were Litavis Advorixson, Vello Cenallus-Mac, Osmid Dubus, and Takeda Willumson. Their story was no different than most Vestrisians who lost their way in the vast wilderness of the Unknown Lands. These four Vestrisians knew about an Old Gantronese fort that used to be an outpost where six other Vestrisians resided. Maurice took in this information with a few ideas. He turned to ask Steele-Oakley where Giffordson and and Olagella were. Steele-Oakley told him they had gone to find the three Vestrisians at the village east of Tsubib Pajibe. They would meet them at the Old Fort where they hoped to call a temporary headquarters. One of the other Vestrisians approached Viyamor with a Major's pin on his left breast. He wanted Maphai and her crew to go down to Waikun to find the Vestrisians there while the rest went to the fort. He introduced himself as Major Osmond Dubius of the Expeditionary Forces.

This came in too fast and caught some of them by surprise. Maphai appeared outraged that her vessel was to be commandeered. She about to object when Major Dubius told her he only needed a transport. He reassured her that she would still have command of her vessel. Maphai's jaw nearly dropped when she heard this. She nodded with approval then told her crew inside the Yacht. Maurice took this time to gather his original companions while his county men left them some privacy on the dock. Each one of them knew what the mission was and their new objective. They heard the words and what was said. Going to a Gantronese fort could provide protection and a beacon for any more Vestrisians to rally at. From there they would be able to lure Caligari's goons and hired guns to face a defended area.

Maurice turned to Oraceth, Taregan, and Eyanosa who were the ones in charge of maintaining, and rousing the steeds on the journey. He ordered the three of them to get their steeds off the platform and ready to travel soon. With his companions around him Maurice went inside the Yacht to retrieve their traveling equipment and belongings. They grabbed the steed masters' things for them while they lured the steeds off the platform. When they came back to the dock the Major had left Steele-Oakley in charge of the Vestrisians along with Maurice. The Major himself boarded the Yacht with Maphai and her crew who prepared to keep going. With the steeds off the yacht Maurice's trio of steed handlers prepared each one for another journey. Their new Vestrisian friends looked bewildered by the sight of such cat steeds that swat at them whenever they tried to approach.

Steele-Oakley caught their attention from the jumbo cats beckoned them to follow him. Without hesitation the Vestrisians and companions followed Steele-Oakley to the other side of this lodge. Turning the corner they found Steele-Oakley with eight strange reptilian creatures with a horse and deer like appearance. Each one had hooves, smooth scaled skin like a snake, long snouts no different than a horse. The found Vestrisians used these beasts as mounts and pack animals. In this part of the Unknown Lands there were plenty of these beasts, and others used for transportation. That was done the native local way, which involved an endurable cloth, flexible thin planks of wood that roll up, and a piece of leather over it. Maurice did not get much of a chance to study more of it. Steele-Oakley urged them to mount up and press on to the Gantronese Fort. Taking the Vestrisian's word Maurice, his companions, and the rest mounted the steeds. From the lodge more than a dozen soldiers, warriors, fighters, and beast handling braves began their journey to this fort.

The Arrest of a Traitor Chapter

What a disgrace, we could have arrested him right there! That is the third time Nepotemus has evaded arrest!” Goldis yelled in the commander’s tent. He sat down brooding over their inability to arrest the corrupt governor Nepotemus. Even Apkis could not believe they did not arrest Nepotemus at the celebrations.
He felt as incompetent as a legless beggar given a horse to ride. Apkis looked at his silver helmet with thought running through his brain. How can they arrest Nepotemus? The better questions would be how do you not arrest him. Apkis picked up the silver helmet then turned to his chest of personal treasures. He set the helmet down wondering if Nepotemus had corrupted some of the nobles outside of the Hegemony.
“How can we arrest Nepotemus without the guards intervening?” Goldis asked Apkis drawing his attention away from his chest and silver helmet.
“I think the better question would be how do we not arrest him.” Apkis suggested to Goldis as a friend and a military adviser. It seemed to have confused the young commander for a few seconds. He saw the look on Goldis’ face which showed he had not clue what to do about his uncle Nepotemus.
“We have already tried arresting him numerous times. The first time was a direct invasion of the palace and straight to the throne room. Our second attempt was intruding his bed chambers and what the fuck happen-?” he was cut off immediately as he went berserk over their failure to arrest Nepotemus.
“Calm down Goldis we can figure this out! Our third attempt fared no better than the two previous ones. He has power that grips the entire city-state like a scroll wrapped in a string.” Apkis said even though he told Goldis what he already knew of their situation.
“What if we just arrested him while he is on a leisurely walks through the streets?” Goldis suggested hoping that would end his uncle’s corrupt reign. “With him away from the palace and his guards Nepotemus will not be spared from humiliation-“ Apkis cut him off again before he could finish his plan.
“He has control over the people remember. Every commoner in town would riot against us. The people would not believe he was corrupt at all.” Apkis reminded him forcing his idea to be thrown away.
“Wait, there are nobles who are opposed to Nepotemus ruling Eronos. They could support us and help defeat those supporting Nepotemus.” Goldis said with excitement in his eyes. It seemed like a great idea to get rid of Nepotemus.
Apkis agreed with the young commander on this. Most of the nobility could force Nepotemus to surrender his rule on the field of battle. Those loyal to Nepotemys could be eradicated or imprisoned. That way he would have no one to stop them arresting the corrupt uncle. After thinking about this he realized they must do so without spilling blood of Eronos.
“Civil war is no option nor can we afford to slaughter the entire palace guard. Might I suggest we have eyes to spy on dearest uncle Nepotemus.” Apkis said thinking that using spies to find Nepotemus guilty of something would prove his corruption. That idea immediately forced the other idea down and appealed to Goldis more than causing a civil war to break out.
“Yes of course use a spy to tell us what he does and what he’s been up to. That is brilliant Apkis let us hire spy!” Goldis cried losing control over himself.
“Perhaps you should relax and leave the spying to me.” Apkis said to Goldis who sat down calming himself. He went up to Goldis and placed a hand on his shoulder. “I am sorry, but you should ret and let me take care of Nepotemus.”
Goldis agreed with him and left the tent for his own quarters in the palace. Apkis took this time to summon the two Angoths Servistine, and Fyre. He sent the guards to fetch both of them at once. In minutes of his orders they entered his tent with weary looks on their faces.
“Servistine, Fyre I am in need of your services. Are there any men capable of stealthy tasks?” Apkis asked even though he knew that some Angoths could do this task. Yet he needed someone who knew these streets and the country around it.
“No sire there are no men among our ranks except there is this one man who gambles with the men. This man is small in stature and almost skinny as a twig.” Fyre explained to Apkis.
“Who is this man?” he asked Fyre hoping he had found his man for the job.
“They call him Larhti the Cheat. Would you like to meet him sir?” Servistine offered to General Apkis of Veece.
“Yes.” Apkis replied then took his cloak from the rack against the tent wall. He followed the two Angoths through the camp to a specific group of soldiers. There was a great deal of laughter, shouting, and music around them. A crowd of soldiers were gathered around a game of Liar’s dice. Apkis approached the crowd with Servistine and Fyre at his side.
“It’s the general stand at attention!” A voice hollered and the entire area of soldiers stood at attention. Every soldier turned to see General Apkis then cleared a path for him. When his men cleared a path for him he saw a small, skinny looking man in a dark cloak over a tunic. As Apkis approached this Larhti he saw his face in the fire light. Larhti had a weasel like face with a hooked nose and a brow sagging over one eye.
“Are yout he one they call Larhti the cheat?” Apkis asked.
“Yes I am that man sir.” Larhti answered giving him a smart look, which would have ended his life or given him a black eye.
“I am in need of your services. Come with me there is a task that suits your talents and skills.” Apkis informed the gambler who seemed intrigued by this offer. Apkis turned around and led the small man to his own tent. There he offered him a cup of wine.
Larhti looked at the silvery cup with wondrous eyes. He looked at Apkis then proceeded to drink with the Veek General. Apkis studied this Larhti for a minute. He wondered if this man whom most would call a hideous creature could spy on Nepotemus for him.
“Do you know of Nepotemus the current ruler of Eronos?” Apkis asked him curious if this man had come with them or was just a rat in the streets.
“Yes I know of that incredibly doltish ruler who convinced every one here that he has divine powers.” Larhti said jesting about the last thing he said.
“Can you spy on him for me?” Apkis asked hoping he would agree to helping him.
“What is in it for me my I ask?” The small skinny man insisted. He was speaking Apkis’ language a little. Apkis was never one to go back on his word or hire someone for free.
“An entire chest of gold, and silver. One of my rings and a woman along with these fine rewards.” Apkis offered Larhti who was captivated by such offers. “You see Larhti I need someone who knows the streets of Eronos and the palace walls as well. People who can stay hidden while eavesdropping on Nepotemus.”
“My good sir you’ve hired the right man for that. For years I have been gambling with the guards. I often slip in and out through secret tunnels. In those tunnels I was giving stolen things to pirates and smugglers.” Larhti said happy to spy on Nepotemus.
“Good you can begin as soon as you are ready. Do not return to me until you have information and anything else that can be used to undermined Nepotemus’ rule.” Akis said to the small man and Larhti was gone from the tent. He sat down and looked at the chest of rings he had brought with him. The Veek General wondered which ring he should give him and if they had any women to give him. He realized they had one woman who used to serve Cren’s decendant. She was given to them as a gift from an Angoth ship. Her name was Ghaaliya Taha, a handmaiden who served as a prostitute would at times. Ghaaliya still hated them since she was considered a revered pet to Cren priests. She had a petite body with those tattoos on her. Her breasts weren’t large, but were developed. It was settled then inside Apkis’ head. Ghaaliya would be perfect to give to Larhti since she never tried killing any of them despite her captivity. All he had to do now was wait for his spy to return.
For a week Apkis waited to hear from the spy. This gave him time to prepare Larhti’s rewards. To his surprise he received the girl and the chest of gold in the same night. Ghaaliya came without being forced to come against her own will. She dined with him every night proving to be good company. The chest of silver and gold consisted of some 4,000 pieces of coin. Apkis even found time to write a message to Goldis. He sent it through one of Yzebel’s servants walking in the streets. It was after dark when Larhti the cheat now Larhti the Hegemon’s spy entered the tent. Apkis turned to see the spy with a smug look about him. He stood up to greet the small man.
“Well what did you find out about Nepotemus?” Apkis demanded to know what Nepotemus was up to from the spy. His spy took a seat and helped himself to a cup of wine.
“I saw Nepotemus in the lower parts of his palace. He was speaking to some Makool and their pirate friends or slaves of some sort. The pirates he spoke with were also aligned with this Cren Order. All three are planning an attack on Eronos and the other city-states. Eronos is first and another thing you should share with the others.” Larhti explained to Apkis, everything he heard and saw. He offered a little extra piece of information.
“What is that?” Apkis asked Larhti. He was curious as to what else this spy has about their enemies. His concerns were growing because of the involvement of the Cren Order and the Makool menacing their borders. As a Veek General he chose not to show his concerns.
“You know how the Makool always attack every kingdom along the coasts? Well they are unified now under the leadership of some god. I also overheard there will be a series of attacks on every member of this triangle alliance.” Larhti finished giving his information to Apkis.
Apkis was more than pleased by this information despite his concerns over the future attacks. He pulled the chest over to Larhti showing his end of the bargain. He beckoned Ghaaliya over to her new master, Larhti, and walked over to his small chest of personal treasures. As he opened the chest he spotted a silver ring with an emerald on top. Apkis picked up this ring and handed it to Larhti.
“I give you these three rewards for your services. There will be a pardon for you to cleanse you of your past dealings with pirates, smugglers and thieves.” Apkis said quickly getting ready to strike against Nepotemus.
“Thank you so much for these lovely gifts. You are most kind to me!” Larhti said as two guards came in to pick up the chest for him. Larhti grabbed Ghaaliya and pulled her along with him. Once they left Apkis began putting his armor and uniform on. There was no time to waste for he had to act fast.
After he was dressed Apkis marshaled over four hundred men and marched on the palace. There he was met by Goldis and the palace guards. Apkis stopped at the steps happy to see him with an assembled force. It numbered up to three hundred and fifty men.
“Are we ready?” Apkis asked Goldis indicating their final attempt to arrest Nepotemus.
“Let’s get this over with.” Goldis replied and they both stormed the palace. They both went straight to Nepotemus’ bed chambers. This time there will be nothing to stop the arrest of Nepotemus. Apkis marched up to the doors with Goldis and kicked them open. Once the doors were wide open Apkis and his men poured into the room.
“Nepotemus you are under arrest, sieze him!” Apkis ordered as he marched up to the bed. Nepotemus was then grabbed and shackled before he could even object to his own arrest.
“What the he-“ Nepotemus tried to speak but he was cut off by Apkis who gave him the charges laid against him.
“You are hereby sentenced to prison for the charges of allowing Eronos to fall under attack, conspiring with the enemy, seizing control without authorization, manipulating the people to show loyalty to you. The last charge is ignoring your real allegiance to Hegemon Gregorius. I label you as a traitor to the Hegemony. Gagh him and shove him into the dungeons bellow.” Apkis explained to Nepotemus before ordering he be taken away. He watched Nepotemus be dragged off to be locked away until his trial.
The next morning Apkis entered the throne room to find the seat empty. There he met Goldis, Yzebel, and the seventeen nobles of Eronos. All twenty of them dined in the throne room discussing who should replace Nepotemus as ruler of Eronos. Yzebel had two nobles in mind for governing Eronos whereas Goldis had one noble in mind. Some of the nobles offered themselves as the replacement rulers. Each offer was turned down until Apkis stood up and offered someone.
“What about Parthos? Perhaps he can be a suitable replacement for Nepotemus?” Apkis offered to the table of nobles.
The room fell silent as the nobles just looked at each other pondering this offer. It appeared they had no other choice than to choose Parthos. Parthos was a revered noble who appealed to the peasants and commoners alike. He employed beggars and thieves to reduce crime and poverty around Eronos. As soon as it appeared that they had come to a decision a Hoplite officer burst into the room.
“Commander Goldis, General Apkis Eronos is being invaded! The Makool are on the beaches and they have raiders with ships blocking aid from coming to us!” the officer shouted to the leaders.
Goldis and Apkis looked at each other thinking “not again” and got up from the table. Both of the leaders left the nobles to their tasks and marshaled the palace guards and the troops of Eronos. They were told the Militia and Hoplites made their columns as they marched through the city. Civilians hid in their homes shut their doors as the bells rang in the air.
“I will rally the ships and deal with those raiders.” Goldis said as they parted ways.
“Good plan I shall marshal my men and Eronos to the beaches.” Apkis yelled after him. He raced through the palace with guards and hoplites alike. Their numbers grew as citizens and militia picked up shield and weapon for their city’s defense. As he exited the palace the militia were marshaled and the people were already moving towards the center of the island. Apkis led over 2,000 men to the beaches where he met the Makool again with his Hoplites on the beach.
He found his own troops and those under Goldis’ command engaging the Makool. They seemed to be faring well against the Makool who had about the same numbers as the previous attack. To him it did not seem like a large army compared to the one that attacked Eronos over a week ago. He took the rallied forces to the front right as officers pulled the first lines back. As came to relieve the first columns of phalanxes the officers stopped to defend their lines and flanks.
Apkis saw the beaches were covered in Makool corpses as it was in the previous battle. He noticed these particular Makool carried the same tattered blue banners with some red banners. In the center of the mass of Makool he spied a large battering ram. While his men were busy killing Makool the Makool were dragging siege equipment onto the sands.
His men switched rows four times before he saw Crowsian and Veeks ships meet the raiders. Goldis’ flagship rammed into the first vessel while the others fired on the ships in the middle of enemy formation. Apkis returned to the battle on the beach only to see even more Makool coming out of the water. For most of the morning Apkis’ forces held off the Makool wave as best they could. Bodies mounted on the beach, but the Makool started pushing them backwards. Men at the front started to die trying to take as many foes with them. Their phalanxes would collapse if he did not act quickly. He turned around to see Eronos behind them.
“Move back to the city.” Apkis said to himself as Hoplites fought to hold their ground.
“Soldiers pull back in formation! Back up to the city!” Apkis hollered out his command to the phalanxes of Hoplites and Militia. Horns blew and officers shouted the commands to the Hoplites and soldiers. The whole force moved as one body backing up to the city. For some time Crowsian and Veek Hoplites pulled back towards the city. It may have given the enemy more ground, but Apkis wanted to see what numbers they were actually fighting this time. As they pulled back officers urged them to kill as many Makool as they could.
Once they reached the city of Eronos Apkis raised his hand and ordered them to stop. He looked up to see the last lines of the Makool coming up and Goldis coming ashore. Fifteen ships ran aground with their archers firing arrows on the Makool ranks. When more ships and men came ashore Apkis gave the order to advance. The Makoo then found themselves outflanked and blocked from the sea.
Apkis witnessed something he never thought possible. The Makool grew angry at each other and started to fight. He saw the two different forces of Makool start to kill each other off. With the enemy divided between different factions Hoplites tool advantage and pressed the attack on the invaders. This distraught hundreds of Makool who chose to take their own lives. Stories told that Makools found it disgraceful to die like this and preferred to die at their own hands than be trapped. In the time it would take for a pig to feast well the Hoplites under Apkis and Goldis met on the sands.
The two friends met on the battlefield as the last of the Makool invaders died. Victory was theirs once again after a long battle. Soldiers cheered, gave out war cries, and raised weapons in the air. Apkis looked at Goldis who smiled at him in return. They shook hands as they took in the feeling of another victory. Apkis was about to speak when a runner came up to Goldis.
“Commander Goldis, Commander Goldis your uncle has escaped!” The messenger said with agony in his voice.
“Dammit! Now we have to hunt him down!” Goldis growled angry over Nepotemus escaping his prison.
Apkis saw a Lieutenant with some men celebrating. He caught the officer’s attention. The Lieutenant and his men came up to Apkis. He looked at the assembled troops before him with celebrating going on around them.
“The traitor Nepotemus has just escaped. Go organize some hunting parties and search for Nepotemus.” He commanded.
