The Cesspit

Every single day the cesspit outside the Gallic Turoni settlement along the banks of the Loire river. was used.  Yet whenever young and nosy Camula, daughter of the proud Iccalus the Oathsworn, would come dump more waste it was empty. Dumping whatever waste she had Camula returned to the settlement puzzled. She asked around, but no one seemed to know why it was empty. Some say the goddess Matres cleaned out the cesspit to prevent disease from spreading. Others pointed out the rains must have cleaned them out. Several of her fellow Turoni said she must have gone to an unused hole or something. As religious and dedicated to the gods as they were Camula still did not believe the goddess would subject herself to such filth to clean it. For days she sat along the edge of the settlement watching others use it. Each night she fell asleep to find her father had places a blanket on her to keep warm.

Drops of rain woke her up after the fifth day of watching her fellow Gauls go down to the cesspit. They either relieved themselves, threw waste away or tossed broken pieces inside. Each one told her they saw it was getting full with each passing day. One of them assumed worms may have eaten the waste or some time of creature had engulfed it and was not hungry yet. She gave it another try by carrying someone else's waste for them and found it to be empty again. Camula turned around and shouted the cesspit was empty towards her settlement. It was at the crack of dawn too. With all her might she tossed the basket full of waste inside the cesspit as it was starting to break. She turned around again only to hear movement coming from the cesspit. Rocks, mud, sticks, and stones moved around behind her. This paralyzed her to the ground with fear and surprise. It took great effort to move her body she was so scared. When she managed to turn around slowly due to the fear that paralyzed her body she witnessed the cesspit transforming. All the mud, stone, rocks, and sticks moved around into the shape of a mouth and the edges made from bricks, and sticks became arms. Camula let out a horrified scream and tried to make a run for it. The grass, and roots tripped her and wrapped themselves around her. She was pinned to the ground and slowly dragged over to the gaping mouth. Her screams pierced the quiet night air causing the animated monstrosity to shudder and let her go. Whatever magic brought the cesspit to life targeted her for some reason. The moment the grass and roots released her Camula got up and bolted towards the settlement. Rushing her way home into the dark made her pass the settlement and into the bank of the river. Camula stopped and dropped to her hands and knees. As she panted and breathed to catch her breath several mounted figures approached her location. Four torch lights illuminated the figures in a red, orange glow.

Six Audi mounted on horse accompanied by three Romans trotted up to the bank of the river. Camula heard stories about these Romans ever since she was child. She was both fascinated, and terrified at the same time. One of them spotted her causing her heart to sink down in her stomach. Something told her these Romans arrived on behalf of some larger force bent on conquering Gaul. From the bottom of her heart she prayed to the Gods they were only here to feast with them.
