He sat at a table along the wall. His choice for a beverage was a Dark Beer Ticker that went well with his current mood. It gave the still young Dormanian a better attitude about things. Inside the large tavern-inn he was in some competitions were held. That included wrestling, fist fights, dueling, drinking, darts, knife throwing, ring toss, tug of war, and "strength". Theodann Enkerrel enjoyed most of these games. Yet there was one competition he hated the most, the sex competition. His love interest indulged herself in the intercourse when ever they did not meet. There was also singing, and music all of which he would find soothing if there not so many men who became cry baby sore losers. Theodann did not mind that however he disliked how that people believed it was the only way one attracts a mate. Music was meant to be played for entertainment not for seduction. It seemed nice and appealing for one to show his love interest that he could play an instrument just for show. In his heart he believed that was a personal choice, and not dazzled by effing music. It was probably just him and others yet he chose to keep that thought to himself. At some point in Kyria he learned how to play just to shut an Elf up. For Theodann that did not happen for his whole life had been nothing but a war in the ranks of the Dragon Mercenaries. He was happy to be home again, and away from those Veerlanders, and other monstrosities the Dragon's Mercenaries had to fight off.
Whenever he came to a tavern with his troop of mercenaries he tried to drown out the news of music being played. Before a singer or bard that had their sweetheart interest at the front took stage he left. This time he wasn't going anywhere. While seeking an escape from the past nightmares of watching comrades die, and the constant struggle to find acceptance, and hard work he joined Dormany's military. Most enemies came from the shores of Veerland, Kashmanol, and the tundra or forests opposite the great lake they shared with the elf state of Derol, Lornav, and Ehkbullar.
Now he was a Recruitment Officer for the military. His old stomping grounds was ripe with plenty of raw recruits and draftees. It gave a hint of rejoice and some relieving revenge inside Theodann. Satisfied with this job he waited for the opportune moment. While he sat at the table for military personnel he witnessed 141 contestants get thrown into three piles outside the inn. Quite a pile up for a tournament. He thought to himself taking another drink. Thankfully the tournaments were held in a large space in the common area. All the losing contestants were thrown outside. One single sore loser got up at the same time as 53 others. Nothing but Jeers, mocking phrases, name calling, and laughter were sent after them.
Just sixty-six contestants lay unconscious on the cobble stone street of Murkford. The fifty-three contestants who got up just walked away in shame. As for the twenty other contestants, they rolled around in pain. One sore loser that got up drew a dagger from his baggy trousers. The very moment this sore loser reentered the common area wielding a weapon, Recruitment Officer Theodann Enkerel got up. As he stood up from his seat every one froze. Armed with nothing, but a baton cane Theodann found his first recruit. He proved to be too quick for the sore loser contestant. Theodann knocked the weapon from his hand then swung it rightward to catch the contestant across the face. In a quick maneuver he swung down on the shoulder blade forcing the contestant down. Now on their knees this sore loser was raw for recruitment. Theodann held his first recruit of the night with the baton crane bearing down on them.
Ignoring the eyes of the patrons, and employees Theodann took the first recruit to the recruiting barracks. He was not the only Recruitment Officer in the city of Murkford, Dormany. They brought in dead beats, who owe money, drunkards, gamblers, drug addicts, thieves, some outlaws, fanatics, and those sick bogeymen who preyed on children. Eighty Dormanian military Recruitment Officers teamed up for this job. For the next three weeks they rounded up raw recruits for the armed forces of Dormany. With the help from the police, sheriffs, and families they rounded up a divisions (legion) worth of recruits. While they prowled the streets and the country side they found drunkards, hit men, dead beats, gamblers, drug addicts, thieves, of all kinds, thugs, gangsters, squatters, outlaws, brawlers, cultists, and bogeymen. That gave them 11, 083 law breakers and nutcases for Murkford's contribution. While they were in the middle of scouring Murkford families came up to them with their screw ups, black sheep, squares, slackers, the outcasts, and the outsiders they never liked. Thanks to those families that gave them an additional 2, 851 along with more draftees. Before they marched them off all the killers, inmates, and convicts were handed over.
For Murkford's contribution to the armed forces a total of 18,457 were taken in. That still left Murkford 1,906,318 people within its limits. Whatever was going on beyond Lornav's borders was concerning. News of an invasion in Kashmanol caused more confusion than actual fear. It was usually the Orcs and such that invaded at times. To the far west the Drasdal States were still divided since their own rebellions, revolts and civil wars. Reports of a massive wave of off worlders overran Kashmanol's defenses. Many of those invaders were killed and halted. More waves of these invaders from the stars came down forcing some other invading faction called the Nazdar to rain bombs down all over Kashmanol. According to eyewitness accounts they flew what many believed to be metal bats or birds. Getting a closer looked revealed what they saw were actually aircraft bombers. Weapons in this world were becoming advanced in certain places. Through trading and deals a lot of states were acquiring advanced weapons for their own defenses. Dormany had the luck of the draw thanks to their geography. Ehkbullar the Dwarf nation had factories mass producing guns. This allowed them to keep all borders secured. Even the Elves took this opportunity to chip in. New weapons did not mean old ones had to go. In a state with 70 million each city could marshal a defensive army. Each city of Dormany used to be their own independent city-state.
Murkford had several enemies before the unification. It could field a considerable force. Just in case the need arose they had a defensive army. Murkford's Police force fielded 6,361 across the city. Sheriffs numbered 250 to maintain peace in the countryside. As for guards Murkford 11, 369 to protect the citizens while keeping the peace and maintaining order. For the dark of the night only 835 watchmen patrolled the streets the police could not get to. That was only for law enforcement and peace keeping. Also some 174 vigilantes helping out peeled off some pressure.
For an all out invasion or attack Murkford had 15,087 regular soldiers. In its reserves a total of 18,162 soldiers. Just in case the soldiers and law needed aid 18,480 civilians formed a militia plus 50,000 when the city faced a threat at its doorstep. Although times changed there was still some use for old professions. Rangers had about 189 prowling the surrounding area. Their Bowmen force showed 7,271 archers. Archery was a skill that needed plenty of training, good eyes, and practice. Murkford also witnessed warriors and elite fighters rise up to defend her. Some 55 Knights, and 314 warriors acted as commanding officers to the militias. As for volunteers about 39, 179 veterans and 2,540 citizens. That totaled 170,266 defenders.
